Do you need a better understanding of the lay of the land of the creative sector in a particular geography to inform your decision making?
The British Council Southern Africa Arts Programme needed to understand the context of the visual arts in 9 countries across Africa to inform their programme design for the African continent. Noting a growth in global interest in the visual arts from Africa, British Council were interested to understand the gaps and opportunities in the value chain where they could have the most impact. We undertook a 6 month process of interviews, surveys and desktop studies to map out where the opportunities lie and how the British Council could collaborate on the continent to support the sector.

Do you need data driven modeling of potential solutions, to understand what is most feasible and best meets a need?
When the Department of Arts and Culture in Botswana wanted to build a new theatre, we teamed up with Botswana based Maitisong Theatre Company to undertake a feasibility study to inform various approaches to theatre development, and model options the Department should consider to ensure the most impactful investment in cultural infrastructure that money could buy. This was not our first experience with new theatre plans by Governments and so we knew the first place to start is a needs assessment, consulting the theatre and performance sector to best understand what infrastructure is needed, and what would have the highest sustainability factor. Our models were based on projects and performances happening now, but also what it could blossom into in the future, with contextually relevant and effective investments.

Do you need a project, sponsorship or investment evaluated to understand its impact and return on investment?
Kwasha! is an innovative and exciting theatre company developed by the Market Lab to support young graduates of their theatre training programme to enter into the workplace and gain vital experience. Their Sponsor - Audit and Accounting firm Mazars, supported by the Institut Français in South Africa, wanted to understand the impact of the programme and the potential for its growth and development. Andani.Africa undertook an impact evaluation, to help Kwasha! and its supporters understand what was working, but also what could be improved upon. Comparing the career trajectories of Kwasha! members versus a ‘control group’ (people with similar profiles who had not entered into Kwasha!), showed that people who got Kwasha! experience were far more successful.

Do you need guidance on the best possible options for return on investment, and which sectors or contexts are investment ready?
When creative companies from a European country reached out to their Embassy in South Africa to find out more about business opportunities on the African continent, the Embassy brought us on team to help them. Andani.Africa undertook an investment readiness assessment based on key industries that align to the Dutch creative economy’s strengths. Opportunities for collaboration and gaps and areas for working hand in hand with sectors in South Africa were identified, focused on mutual benefit of both the South African and Dutch creative economies.

Do you need to assess brand sponsorship opportunities, or understand brand perception and fit ahead of a new product launch or cultural sector alignment?
A major player in the music industry wanted to assess its brand reputation within the sector, ahead of a series of new sponsorship and partnership decisions. Andani.Africa carried out social listening, sentiment analysis and large scale surveys to build a rounded picture of how the brand was understood by artists, fans and industry stakeholders. This gave the client clear, evidence-based insight into its standing in the market, highlighting existing strengths and perceptions to address before committing to new partnerships.

Do you need to understand not just what's happening in your sector now, but what's likely to happen next?
We turn raw data into decision-ready insight through quantitative and diagnostic analysis, identifying patterns, gaps and drivers within your programmes, markets or sector. Where clients need to plan ahead rather than just look back, we build predictive models that forecast trends and outcomes, giving decision-makers an evidence base to act on before a shift occurs, not after.

Do you need your data working for you everyday, not just when a report is due?
We design and build custom platforms and dashboards that give clients an ongoing, living view of their own data, replacing static spreadsheets and one-off reports with tools built around how the institution actually works. Where the need is continuous rather than periodic, we develop automated tools, including chatbots, that keep data flowing, updating and useful long after a project ends.

Do you have more qualitative data than your team can realistically read, code and make sense of?
We apply machine learning to process qualitative material at a scale manual analysis can't match, surfacing themes and patterns across large volumes of interviews, open-ended survey responses, or documents. Alongside this, we use NLP and sentiment analysis to make sense of unstructured data such as social media commentary or public submissions, turning noisy, informal text into structured insight.

Do your findings need to reach and convince people who will never read the full report?
We turn data into visuals and stories that make complex findings clear and persuasive for the audiences who need to act on them, from boardrooms to policymakers. Where a static report undersells the value of the work, we build interactive tools that let people explore findings for themselves, so insight stays usable long after the presentation ends.

Do you need to see the fuller picture behind your data, not just what's captured in one system?
We integrate and enrich data from multiple sources, combining an institution's own datasets with external data to fill gaps and add context that a single dataset alone can't provide. Where location matters to the question being asked, we apply GIS mapping to reveal spatial patterns, such as where investment, participation or impact is concentrated or missing, giving clients a geographic view of their own data.
